Frans joined the band in mid-2002 and it happened incredibly quickly. Our previous bassist had left the band and we urgently needed a new bassist as we had less than 2 weeks before an important concert as part of a music competition.
Dennis and Frans were old friends and had played together before, so it was easy and quick to get him up to speed on the songs.
Before Frans joined, I had a basic idea of how the band composition should be. I wanted there to be a maximum of 10 years between the youngest and oldest member, so that we had roughly the same references. Frans was 34 and Malene was 23, so I was a bit worried about letting such an old guy into the band. Could he be cool enough?
That rule was completely put to shame! Frans is one of the coolest people I have known. He fit perfectly into the band and even brought a lot of experience and technical expertise in the form of his profession as a sound technician.
The songs he was given, he ate for breakfast and was ready for more. His groove on bass completely swung the songs, and since Dennis and Frans had played together before, it was like watching an older couple who just knew how to lead each other in the dance. Unique to see and listen to.
He had attitude and also experimented with his visual expression on stage, but one thing never changed. His Mørch Bass. It was an icon on Frans.
His cool, rebellious attitude also came through in his musical role, songs like “Get U” and “Hesitate” lay steady, cool with tempo and power. Like a steam train that can’t be stopped once it gets going.
His musical background in many bands meant that, like Dennis, he could play anything. In “Lades Kælder”, when we were filling out our set, the two of them often played drum/bass improv solos, which was ultra cool. I was lucky that I was “the creative one,” because when those two jammed out, I couldn’t keep up. I wouldn’t even try! But I enjoyed having them behind my back. It was always a reassuring feeling.
His warmth offstage, when we had band bonding time, was great. He was our uncle who, when he had just had a beer or two, was always up for a laugh.
In 2016 we talked about finding a day to jam and talk about old times, but we couldn’t find a day. And unfortunately, we didn’t follow up on our thoughts and find the time before it was too late.
In 2017 Frans Lindell passed away, far too early.
You will always be missed musically and as a friend, as someone you just knew was out there somewhere.
I am grateful that he was a part of Plug in Baby. Thanks to him, we have a lot of great songs and we were able to record them in his studio. So he left us a lot of musical memories. Thx
