Beginning of the band

Follow the Bitch

The journey to becoming “Plug in Baby” started in 1998. Along the way we had various band members and various band names. Our first bandname was the working title “Follow the Bitch”

When we started we played covers by Radiohead, K’s Choice, Kashmir among others.

This jam session is recorded in Kasper Flindt’s room at his parents’ house on April 11, 1999. Featuring Malene, Flindt, and Ovi.

This is our cover of ‘Lucky’ by Radiohead, recorded before we made our own music.

In 1999, we recorded our first 5 songs at our rehearsal room, Gnisten, for our demo “Minor Mistakes.” At that time, the band consisted of Malene, Ovi, Bendy, Giri, and me. Before our very first concert at Gnisten in Værløse in 2000, we voted on a solid new bandname and ended up with the name “In Gloom,” a reference to the Kashmir song “Gloom.” Later, our name was shortened to just “Gloom” as we hoped it would be easier for our fans to shout at our concerts.

Making of the

I'll Vanish EP

In 2002, we got in touch with Henrik Niedermeier of the 90’s rock band Strawberry Slaughterhouse. He introduced us to Richard from Ventura Studio, where we recorded our EP “I’ll Vanish.”

The image on the cover was photographed by Jesper Skoubølling, and the styling was done by Sidsel Marie Bøg

New name, new collaboration

Gloom became “Slumberland” when we began working with Maurice M. Hawksworth, a producer with a small independent record label. Why Slumberland? Well, in a CD cover in a Kashmir album, there is a hidden text “The little demon in Slumberland,” and Maurice wanted a word with three syllables. So Slumberland it was, still a reference to one of our favorite bands. In hindsight, not the greatest name, and it was short lived too.

An interview with Malene/Slumberland by Flindt for a school project in 2003

Flindt: “Can you try to tell me how it all started?”

Malene: “Well, it started about 5 years ago, when Kasper Hagenflindt wanted to start a band, but he didn’t have anyone to play with him. And then he was at the cafe at my high school and he heard me singing and I guess he thought it was good, because he asked if I would be the lead singer in a band he was starting, and I was so excited, because I had always dreamed of it.

Then Kasper went out and found the rest of the members of the band, which at the time didn’t have a name and didn’t have one for a year and a half.”

Flindt: “What was your first thought when you started meeting up?”

Malene: “Well, I was very excited. In high school it was the first time I had really tried singing in front of people. So now I had to face some strangers and suddenly open my mouth and sing this rock music. It was a challenge for me, but it worked out somehow.

Flindt: “What were your future visions with it back then?”

Malene: “Besides the obvious big dreams of becoming a successful rock band and a world-famous rock singer, I think we just took it step by step and saw where it took us. We just got better and better and the dreams and ambitions grew as well. “

Flindt: “Where are you now?”

Malene: “Right now we are at the point where we have more or less found the expression we want to work on musically and hopefully we are on the brink of a breakthrough.”

Flindt: “How did you get there?”

Malene: “I think our rhythm guitarist’s ambitions for the band, hard work, and our musical expression. What I think has been important for our band is that Kasper Hagenflindt has done a lot of work to contact places to play and find the right contacts. He has spent so much of his life figuring out what we should do to succeed. That’s why we’ve gotten this far ahead of all other bands.”

Flindt: “Is there also something about contacts?”

Malene: “Yes, of course. Now we have finally found gold in the fact that we have our new producer Maurice on the project, who guides us and produces our new songs, and who also has a lot of contacts in the outside world that we can probably get access to and use. So we hope that with his help we can reach even further.

Well, Maurice sees us as a Danish band that is trying to make it big in the US. He sees that our music and our expression belong there, not so much in Denmark but mostly in the US. So it’s pretty exciting. But right now we need to work on creating new songs and getting into the studio to record and make an entire album and become better. Our live show, improve it a lot so we are ready to take on the American audience with a storm.

The plan is then to go to New York in about a year or something and sell the product.

Flindt: “What are you doing to develop the things you’re talking about?”

Malene: “We hired a stylist a few years ago to find an expression for us, find a style for us. And it may have helped us in that we looked at other bands and what they did and thus reflected what our expression might be in relation to them.”

Flindt: “Who do you think has been a big inspiration for you?”

Malene: “A big inspiration for me has been the lead singer of Radiohead, without a doubt probably the biggest. His way of writing music and creating melodies and lyrics has always fascinated me. It always touches me deeply when I hear their music and his music. He is my biggest role model.”

Flindt: “How do you bring these small elements from your role models into Slumberland?”

Malene: “Well, I assume that these inspirations have just become an integrated part of who I am and the expressions I have and it’s the way I am and the way I think about things and the way I express myself and the way I create my melodies and it’s the way I bring it onto the tape, I would say.”

Flindt: “How do you want to influence others with your charisma?”

Malene: “I would like them to think that the music is being channeled through me and out to them with a power that I am trying to give them with my voice and my expression with my eyes and my body and be a little power center on stage. That is what I am trying to be visually. And it is also what I feel like I am especially as the lead singer in a rock band where the music is so heavy and powerful. “

Flindt: “What do you see the future bringing in the next few years?”

If it goes according to my plan, we will soon have a breakthrough in Denmark and then hopefully in a year and a half we will go to the US. So you can almost guess that I will say that we will of course use the breakthrough in the US and become a respected rock band. “

Flindt: “Do you also feel that you are hindered by the “Law of Jante” in Denmark?”

Malene: “Not so much anymore actually. Now I have started to be actually quite indifferent to it. I think I have accepted that as the lead singer in a rock band like us, you have to crap on the “Law of Jante” a bit because it is just not an expression that I would not say does not fit into the Danish mentality, but to be who I am on stage, you have to crap the “Law of Jante” sometimes. “

Flindt: “If we succeed as Slumberland and it’s been 10 years and we’ve reached the top, how do you think you’ll look back on these times now?”

Malene: “Right now we have the freedom to choose what we want to be, but once we’re famous, people will put us in a box, as well as our music and what we do in the future. So I think we might look back and miss this period in our lives a little, where we were so free to do whatever we wanted.”

Flindt: “What do you bring to the band?”

Malene: “I would say one of our newer songs that I think, not so much where it was something I contributed to, but that was kind of revolutionary for the way we made music and that kind of paved the way for what I think will be our expression going forward. It’s a song called faceless, where both vocally I sing in a completely different way than I usually do and also musically, rhythmically, it’s also a song where it just suddenly explodes, and it’s a quiet song and many strange things happen. And I think that song is decisive for what we will make in the future of music, I really think so.”

In late 2002, we started recording a lot of songs at Woodhouse Studio in an effort to find our own sound and create a hit that could get us on the radio. With the help of Maurice’s connection, we were able to use the studio for free, even though we didn’t have much time. Our goal was to release an album in early 2003, along with a few singles before the release. We managed to finish three singles with the recordings from Woodhouse. But we did a lot of mixing and re-recording at Frans’ small work studio through 2003.

In late 2003, we recorded and released a cover version of Madonna’s “Power of Goodbye.” While it did get some airplay on the radio, it didn’t lead to any new opportunities for us.

It was around this time that we made the decision to reduce our group from five members to four, which resulted in a significant change in our sound.

When we said goodbye to our lead guitarist, we had to alter a lot of the songs we recorded at Woodhouse. This made our sound less pop and more hard rock.

In 2004 we used a lot of our time on finding our new harder sound. The plans for an album were put on hold for now.

Past members of

Past band members

Past members of the band now included Kasper Ovi, Bendy Madsen and Giri Raman.

Kasper Ovi - Lead Guitar

I knew that the genre would be rock, and I was definitely a fan of a good guitar solo. However, I wasn’t very skilled on the guitar myself, even though my hero was Slash. So I needed my own Slash.

Ovi’s twin brother was one of my good friends, and I had heard him jamming on his guitar when I visited his brother. He was at the top of my list for the band, and fortunately, he was willing to join us.

We three had gone to elementary school together, but we were in different classes, so it wasn’t completely unfamiliar for us to meet up over a beer and form a band together. Ovi was solid on guitar. Without a doubt! His musical tastes and style were influenced by Radiohead, Portishead, and Mad Season, which could be heard on some of the tracks he contributed later on, like “Shadowplay” and “Virus.”

In the band, Ovi was cheerful, had a sense of humor, and brought structure. He was someone who added value to the team spirit. Ovi was with us from the start in 1999 until the fall of 2003. After some bumps in the road, we decided to continue the band without Ovi. It wasn’t an easy decision because we were definitely not enemies.

It turned out that Ovi couldn’t be replaced. After holding auditions with potential guitarists, we decided to move forward as a quartet and I would do my best to fill out the sound in my own way.

Bendy Madsen - Bass, Drums

We still needed to find a drummer for the band. We tried out two people before Bendy joined. Both of them declined quickly. Bendy is my brother-in-law, but it wasn’t obvious that he would be the drummer because his main instrument is guitar. However, after we talked about it, he expressed an interest in taking on the role of drummer. That’s how the band was formed.

Bendy was a good drummer and he had good ideas for songs, especially guitar parts. His style was probably more on the technical and softer side compared to what I envision for the band. Bendy was a few years older than the rest of us, and his musical tastes leaned more towards Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Dream Theater, rather than 90s rock like the rest of us.

He usually played major chords and I played minor chords. It was okay with the variety of songs, but you could definitely hear the difference in our styles. He was also clearly a better guitarist than I was, without a doubt. It challenged and improved me in a good way.

When we had to say goodbye to our bassist Giri in the spring of 2001 and needed to find a replacement, we decided to shake things up and have Bendy switch to bass, which opened up the role for a new drummer. It was clearly an improvement to have Bendy on bass because you could tell that his primary musical abilities were on a stringed instrument.

Bendy was the bassist until the spring of 2002, when a family event made it difficult to continue our collaboration, leading to him leaving the band.

Bendy contributed guitar arrangements and songs like “Being us” and “Don’t tell me”

Giri Raman - Bass

I didn’t know Giri initially, but when I couldn’t convince the only bassist I knew from high school to join my band, I had to look elsewhere. I went to a music school in Værløse and asked if they had any bassist students. Through this, I met Giri, who I saw at his Tuesday jam session. I pitched him the idea of the band an Giri then became the fourth member.

He was a humorous and enigmatic person, and it was hard to tell if you really knew him. This made him a good fit for our rock band, and he even had a pair of leather pants, which was an added bonus.

However, Giri had a tendency to be forgetful when it came to making plans and agreements. He often arrived late and this caused some problems. After we recorded a demo in the spring of 2001, we also realized that his groove wasn’t quite right.

We had scheduled a photo shoot for a particular weekend, but he didn’t show up until way late and he couldn’t be reached. We realized that if we wanted to continue with the music, Giri would have to leave the band.

He was with us from the start in 1999 until the spring of 2001.
